Is BOTOX For Me?

Most people think they know what BOTOX is – after all, it was by far, the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatment performed in 2010, as noted by both The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Botox

Many of our patients who request BOTOX in Houston will ask for it because it is the most popular wrinkle-buster that they know of.  Meaning they’ve heard about it in the news or they know someone who has gotten it done and desire the same effects.  However, the most important thing to consider when contemplating BOTOX is to address the underlying concern: what type of wrinkles are you trying to get rid of?

BOTOX and its competitors Dysport and Xeomin, are botulinum toxins which effectively treat a certain subset of wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles beneath the skin.

It is very important to find an experienced plastic surgeon who knows when and where to paralyze facial muscles.  This injectable is effective but only for patients who are older and have experienced significant facial movements to give their faces that type of etching.  We would not inject BOTOX into an 18 year old patient simply because that patient has not given her facial muscles that type of workout yet.  However, for patients in their late 20s who have obviously used their facial muscles often over time, BOTOX is ideal because anywhere the muscle moves, the skin follows resulting in wrinkles.

BOTOX is ideal for:

  • Creases in the forehead from repeatedly raising eyebrows
  • Furrows between the eyebrows from frowning and
  • Crow’s Feet around the eyes

Everyday use of muscles and skin movement will develop wrinkles if the muscle is not paralyzed.  Similar to a notebook paper being folded in half, a crease will appear.  Luckily for us, unlike a piece of paper, by paralyzing the muscle with BOTOX, the skin can no longer move therefore making it nearly impossible to get etched lines in the skin.

We usually recommend patients start early with BOTOX, as in when they first notice these types of wrinkles so muscles can be paralyzed  – erasing them and preventing them from further deepening.
